9.0 or above earthquake before 2027?
🗂 Part of event: 9.0 or above earthquake before 2027? →💡 What the odds say
The market puts this at about a 8% chance — very unlikely.
No money — just record your call and see if you were right. Yes is at 8% right now.
Despite recent deadly earthquakes in Venezuela and Peru, none approach magnitude 9.0, and the San Andreas fault's silence, while alarming, cannot produce a 9.0, so the low 9% odds reflect the extreme rarity of such events, though three percentage points of upward movement in the past week suggest heightened public sensitivity to seismic risk.
📊 Base rate: Since 1900, magnitude 9.0+ earthquakes have occurred roughly once every 25 years, making the annual probability about 4%, so the current 9% odds are slightly elevated relative to historical baseline.
What's driving it
- • The Los Angeles Times article (Jul 18) about the San Andreas fault's 'ominous silence' may be increasing public anxiety about a major quake, contributing to the 3-point upward move in the past week.
- • The deadly Venezuela earthquakes (death toll >5,100, Jul 19-20) and moderate quakes in Peru (5.6, Jul 19) and Kermanshah (above 5.0, Jul 20) are raising general awareness of seismic activity, even though none are near magnitude 9.0.
- • No clear catalyst for the 24-hour +3pt move, but the cumulative effect of multiple July headlines may be nudging the odds upward.
The case for YES
- • The San Andreas fault's prolonged quiet period, as highlighted by the Los Angeles Times, could theoretically precede a major rupture on a different fault (e.g., Cascadia subduction zone) capable of generating a magnitude 9.0 earthquake.
- • The high death toll from the Venezuela earthquakes (over 5,100, per Euronews Jul 18) shows that destructive earthquakes are occurring with some frequency, and a 9.0 could happen unexpectedly before the market closes on Dec 31, 2026.
- • The market's resolution window extends through December 2026, and history shows that magnitude 9.0 earthquakes (e.g., 2011 Tohoku, 2004 Sumatra) occurred without clear geological precursors.
The case for NO
- • No earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or higher has occurred since the market started (Dec 8, 2025), and the probability of such a rare event in a single year is historically very low (around 4% annually).
- • Recent headlines report only moderate earthquakes (magnitude 5.0–5.6) in Peru, Iran, and Venezuela, none of which indicate an imminent magnitude 9.0 event.
- • The San Andreas fault, despite its alarming silence, is incapable of producing a magnitude 9.0 earthquake (maximum around 8.3), so the Los Angeles Times article does not directly increase the likelihood of a 9.0.
What to watch
- • A major earthquake (magnitude 8+) in a subduction zone (e.g., Japan, Chile, Alaska) before year-end would likely increase the odds of a 9.0 (Yes direction).
- • Publication of the USGS 'Significant Earthquakes' list updates (ongoing) could confirm or deny recent large events, potentially moving odds if a 9.0 is initially reported.
- • As the December 31, 2026 resolution deadline approaches, the odds will likely converge toward 0% if no 9.0 occurs (No direction).

How it resolves
Settled on-chain by UMA's optimistic oracle: once an outcome is clear, anyone can propose the result, which then enters a challenge window where it can be disputed with evidence before it finalizes.
⚖️ A proposed outcome can be disputed during a challenge window before it's final.
Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to “Yes” if 1 or more earthquakes with a magnitude of 9.0 or higher occur anywhere on Earth between December 8, 2025 12:00 PM ET, and December 31, 2026, 11:59PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef). If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used. After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.

When will Starship flight 14 happen?
The field is extremely front-loaded: the top candidate (before 2027-04-01) commands 95% odds, and all ten candidates above 5% stack into the next nine months, reflecting a market consensus that Flight 14 is imminent but not immediate. The largest recent shift is the collapse of near-term dates after the July 17 abort, when the 'before 2026-10-01' candidate dropped from ~80% to 71% following a second launch abort.
