The market puts this at about a 0% chance — almost no chance.
No money — just record your call and see if you were right. Yes is at 0% right now.
The market is fully confident that 'cy' will not be Iran's head of state by end of 2026, reflecting the entrenched position of Supreme Leader Khamenei and no visible path for an unknown figure to seize power amid ongoing US-Iran talks and regional tensions.
📊 Base rate: Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has had only two Supreme Leaders, with Khamenei in power since 1989, making a change of head of state within a single year very rare.
What's driving it
- • No recent headline mentions 'cy' or any potential successor outside the current leadership structure (Reuters, Jun 19; NPR, Jun 23).
- • The US-Iran talks in Switzerland ended without any visible shift in Iran's internal power dynamics (DW.com, Jun 21).
- • The April Strait of Hormuz attacks and troop deployments did not destabilize the regime enough to prompt leadership change (CBS News, Apr 22).
The case for YES
- • A sudden collapse of the regime due to escalated conflict or internal revolt could install a new de facto leader, potentially 'cy'.
- • If US-Iran negotiations produce a power-sharing or transitional governance deal, 'cy' could emerge as a compromise candidate.
- • A health crisis or death of the current Supreme Leader could lead to an unexpected succession, but 'cy' would need to be the chosen successor.
The case for NO
- • Supreme Leader Khamenei retains firm control over armed forces and state institutions, with no credible rivals from headlines.
- • The nuclear inspection dispute and ongoing talks indicate a focus on external negotiations, not internal leadership change (NPR, Jun 23).
- • No evidence in any provided headline suggests 'cy' holds any official position, is a candidate, or has a political base in Iran.
What to watch
- • Potential breakdown of US-Iran talks by late 2026 could escalate conflict and increase volatility, possibly raising Yes odds if it threatens regime stability.
- • A major internal protest or unrest before end of 2026 could create an opening for a new leader, moving Yes upward.
- • Any dated announcement of Khamenei's health issues or a designated successor would directly affect the market, with Yes rising if 'cy' is named.

Resolution criteria
This market will resolve to the individual who de facto holds and exercises the powers of the head of state of the Islamic Republic of Iran on December 31, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET. For the purposes of this market, “de facto holds” refers to the individual who exercises primary governing authority over the Iranian state at that time, including effective control over the armed forces, national institutions, and core executive decision-making, regardless of formal title, constitutional designation, or international recognition. Formal appointment, recognition by the United Nations, or recognition by foreign governments is not required. If more than one individual claims to be head of state, this market will resolve to the individual who demonstrably exercises primary governing control within Iran’s territory at the specified time. Indicators of de facto authority may include control over the armed forces and security services; control over executive ministries and state administrative institutions; enforcement of national laws; issuance of binding national directives; and effective control over the capital and core state infrastructure. Symbolic status, foreign recognition without domestic control, nomination without effective authority, or expired prior service will not qualify. If no individual exercises effective governing control at the specified time, this market will resolve to “No Head of State”. The primary resolution source will be a consensus of credible reporting assessing who exercises effective governing authority at the specified time.
